And that, my friends, is how you sell a bassinet in a depression.

Argington just announced their newest, greenest, and cheapest nursery furniture ever, and I think it might just rock. The Bam Collection is available in birch or solid bamboo. It’s simple, almost traditional, even, but it’s got smooth, modern details, and I expect it has a nice, high-quality finish and feel. [The first chance to kick the slats will be in a couple of weeks at the ABC Kids Expo in Las Vegas, stay tuned.]

The Bam bed system is modular, so the crib actually starts out as a bassinet, which converts to a crib. Then there’s a second, separate kit for converting it to a toddler bed. Which sounds needlessly complex, perhaps, but it’s really a smooth pitch which reverses the kind of financial jiu jitsu that always haunts the discussion of buying a bassinet–an iconic, often expensive piece of baby furniture whose useful life can be measured in weeks.
The so-called Nursery Value Pack knocks the price of the bassinet [$359] plus the crib conversion kit [$329], down to the price of the crib itself [$585]. So really, you could just imagine you’re getting a nice deal on a crib, with the bassinet thrown in for free. And that frees you up to argue over whether you need a changing table. [If I had to choose, I'd rather get the dresser, below].

The lowest prices are for the two natural birch finishes–white and ebony, which really looks browner than black to me]. But I’m a sucker for bamboo, and even with a $200/pc. premium, it’s still the best price I’ve ever seen for solid bamboo nursery furniture.
Anyway, it all looks sweet; Argington’s even added a shopping cart to their website, so you can order it right now for mid-November delivery.

Argington. Web: Argington.com Argington puts a green spin on
their modern furniture: New York-based designers Andrew
Thornton and Jenny Argie strive to use only solid wood (‘virtually
no MDF, particle board other similar engineered wood products.”)
All Argington’s wood is FSC certified as part of its “sustainable manufacturing”
(glues are low-emission, etc). The brand only has one
crib offering (the two-toned Sahara for $700) with matching dresser
for $800. Argington also offers a limited selection of organic cotton
crib bedding. Early reports on this line are encouraging: quality
is good and the pricing is slightly more reasonable when compared
to the $1000+ modern cribs Argington competes against.
Rating: B+
Organic babyfurniture
What makes nursery furniture green? As with many products, marketed as organic or natural, there isn’t a consensus as to what that means-and that’s true with baby furniture as well.
Furniture, by its very nature, isn’t the most green product on earth. A toxic brew of chemicals is used to manufacture and finish most items. Example: most furniture isn‘t made of solid wood but veneers (a strip of wood over particle board). Glue is often used to adhere the veneer on particle board for dresser tops and Sides. Some glues contain formaldehyde-as we discussed earlier on page 24, some baby furniture makers I have been sued by the state of California for unsafe levels of this chemical.
For many folks, green means sustainable. So green baby furniture should be made from sustainable wood. But which wood is more eco-friendly? Some say bamboo is the most green. Others say rubber wood (ramin) since the tree it comes from (Para rubber tree) is usually cut down anyway after it is used to produce latex.
Given all the confusion, here is our advice for green nursery furniture shoppers: Look for solid wood furniture that is certified. There are a handful of non-profit environmental organizations that certify wood as sustainable: the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) is among the best known. FSC-certified crib makers include Argington (reviewed in this chapter).

Amazing Bamboo Furniture NOT For Sale

I am very open about my love for all things bamboo. Some of the biggest news out of BKLYN DESIGNS this year were these amazing one-of-a-kind Argington bamboo furniture sets. The bamboo bunk bed and toy box combo ($4600 value) and bamboo crib and bamboo changing table ($3000 value) were raffled off to benefit the American Cancer Society.

These pieces are not available for retail, probably due to the high price tags, but I personally wish they were. This is the type of furniture my husband and I would save up for, dream about, and then once we get it we would keep it forever. And the solid bamboo with low VOC finishes probably would last forever. Other eco-friendly versions of this furniture are available and you can check them out here. And I will keep hoping they release a bamboo version.

Argington wrapped up the 2009 BKLYN DESIGNS with a bang raffling off our one of a kind, uber green bamboo editions of our Uffizi bunk bed + toy box and our Sahara crib + Delphi changing table combo packages. The show in general was a huge success where we had all our minitures on display, gave away tons of organic hemp bags, natural and biodegradable latex ballons, and magnet sets so you too can create a modern home and arrange Argington furniture inside.
(drum roll………..) The winners of the 2009 BKLYN DESIGNS Argington & American Cancer Society raffle are:
Bamboo Uffizi bunk bed + toy box goes to Tom Hollister of Mountainside, NY
Sahara crib + Dephi changing table goes to Mark Margolis of London, UK (long way from home!)
Please see the image below of the raffle.

Many many thanks to all those who attended the show, and help to make the event so successful. All the purchased tickets have helped us to make a generous donation this year to the ACS.
Please see below for some additional pics of the show. See you next year and thanks again for all the lovely support!

Brooklyn Designs 2009
Brooklyn Designs was a bit smaller this year overall, but it was bigger for at least one exhibitor: Argington. They had a big space which was outside the hall and facing the street, making it easy to see their new stuff. While we don’t generally feature folks we’ve featured before (we look for new stuff), Argington had some really nice new designs for design minded parents….

>> Argington – Jenny Argie and Andrew Thornton showed off these brand new baby and kid’s beds in pure bamboo, and auctioned them off for charity. The bamboo finish was beautiful. We particularly liked the multi-functioning kid’s bed with desk space built in.

Alright, this is like five kinds of freakin’ bamboo awesome all in one.

Argington is one of the kid-related design outfits participating in the BKLYN DESIGNS festival this weekend in DUMBO. All the kid-related exhibitors are located at Jane’s Carousel at 56 Water Street, a few doors down from the grownup side of the show at St. Ann’s Warehouse.
But anyway, back to the bamboo insanity. Two things:

Argington is holding a raffle this weekend, with gross proceeds going to the American Cancer Society. The prizes are one-off, solid bamboo versions of their Sahara crib and Delphi changing table [the ones whose bases interlock in a most wonderful way, retail value: $3,300] and their Uffizi bunk bed with a Fuji toybox [value: $4,600]. These things look fantastic. I want to set the bunk bed up in my living room, just to look at it. Tickets are $10 each, and are on sale at Argington’s space. Winners will be announced on the last day of the show, Sunday, May 10 at 3pm.

But that’s not all. There’s also the Argington Traveling Museum. The what?? you say? The Argington Traveling Museum. It’s a limited edition [20], solid bamboo valise that contains meticulous little scale models of the children’s designs the company has created over the last six years. The valises will be given away for free to the first 20 folks who order $2,000 or more at BLKYN DESIGNS. Or to the first 20 people who pony up $1,000 for a valise. Or to whatever combination of the two clears out the valise truck first.

If there is a crazier, awesomer piece of kid’s design expo swag to be had on God’s Green-Design Earth right now, I confess, I don’t know what it is. But if you’ve got a nursery wad to blow in DUMBO this weekend, it could all be yours.
BKLYN DESIGNS runs from May 8-10 [blkyndesigns.net]

Argington at BKLYN Designs
Having children often inspires and motivates people to make changes in their lives or execute projects that have long been brewing. When Jenny Argie and Andrew Thornton learned that they were expecting their first child in 2002, they undertook to design the furniture that their baby would use for its first few years. In short order, their DIY preparations for parenting turned into a small business, and their company, Argington, was born around the same time as their son.

Argington now has a substantial collection of furniture, including bed frames, chairs, bunks, changing tables, and dressers; as well as a line of bedding. Driven by a desire to keep the kids healthy, Argington chose to make all of the furniture with FSC-certified wood, low-VOC glues, and non-toxic finishes; and the bedding with 100% organic cotton. Argie and Thornton, both midwesterners by birth, now live in Brooklyn with their two sons, and their products are sold widely.
Next week, not far from Argington HQ, BKLYN Designs will be taking over DUMBO for a public showcase of 45 local contemporary furniture designers. Argington has been involved in BKLYN Designs previously, and this year they’ll be running a retrospective of their work in the form of a traveling museum, set in the historic Jane’s Carousel, an old carousel built in 1922 that has been restored and continues operations today in DUMBO. A set of miniature models of Argington’s collection will be made for the occasion in limited edition, and they will be raffling off four pieces of furniture (a bed, a toy chest, a crib, and a changing table) to benefit the American Cancer Society. If you’ll be attending BKLYN Designs next week, be sure to get yourself a raffle ticket (or five) for $10 each. The winners will be announced on May 10 and all proceeds will go to the American Cancer Society.
And don’t forget to look for Dwell while you’re there! We are a proud sponsor of BKLYN Designs this year and will be running the Dwell Home Tour on Saturday May 9—a great opportunity to peek into some beautiful homes around the area.
